MEMORABLE ACCOMMODATION SINCE 1903

Imatran Valtionhotelli is an Art Nouveau castle designed by architect Usko Nyström and completed in 1903.

Before the stone-built state hotel, two wooden hotels stood on the same site, both of which burned down at the end of the 19th century. The hotel’s original name was Grand Hôtel Cascade. The first hotel entrepreneur came from St. Petersburg, and the guests included Germans and Russians who visited to fish and admire the spectacular rapids. Imatra’s reputation as a travel destination began with Empress Catherine the Great’s visit to the rapids in 1772.

During the Finnish Civil War, the hotel functioned as a military hospital. In the Second World War, it served as the headquarters of the Karelian Army, and later during the Continuation War, as the Military Administration Department of the General Headquarters. The hotel’s basement also housed Imatra’s air defense center during the war. After the war, the building was renovated based on plans by architect Aarne Ervi, and between 1985–1987 it was restored to its original appearance, including its colors.

The congress wing, built in 1983, was designed by architect Ilmo Valjakka. In May 2009, a modern spa hotel was opened alongside the historic hotel.

In public polls organized by Apu magazine in 2014 and 2017, Imatran Valtionhotelli was voted the most beautiful building in Finland.
